My friend and I did a unguided fully outfitted moose float trip the 2014 season through Alaska Bush Adventures. This was our first time hunting moose or visiting Alaska for that matter. We did our research and asked Hugh and Ryan many questions in the months leading up to the trip. They were both very willing, able, and helpful in answering our many questions about gear, weather, hunting, etc. We got maps of the area and over the phone Hugh took the time to talk us through the terrain and the areas we should look for moose. They also provided a detailed checklist of the gear we should bring which was very helpful. The flight to the drop off spot was really amazing flying over the mountains. Everything went very smoothly getting dropped off and set up with the gear. We were impressed with the amount and variety of the food provided. The gear met all expectations and the tents (Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Series) were awesome. They have a frame/rainfly that you set up first which makes a shelter for you to set the tent up in. This is very useful for setting up and taking down the tent in the rain (which it did a lot of). The fishing was really good, the char and grayling were delicious and easy to catch. Seven days into the float I got a beautiful 52 inch bull with nice wide palms. We got lots of pictures of him as he came into our calls and raking for a easy 50 yard shot. When we arrived at the base camp Ryan and his crew did a great job of taking care of all the logistics involved with getting everyone and the meat and antlers home. Overall the hunt is exactly what we were looking for: a practical way to hunt moose unguided, where success is dependant on the effort we put forth. We got to focus on the hunting and know that Alaska Bush Adventures has the gear and logistics covered.
